Do I need a passport to travel in Mexico?
You will in 2008.
But for now, If you are from the U.S. or Canada
and are traveling to Rosarito or within 75 miles of the US border. you
only need an official ID card such as
a valid Driver's License. If you want to travel further into Mexico, you will need your passport and a
Visa. Mexican Visas can be obtain right at the border. Once you enter Mexico, just pull over
and ask. The airports also have locations for Visas. If you are from any other country, you will need to check with the
Mexican Embassy or Consulate nearest you (the New York Consulate has a detailed list of requirements on
their website).
Can foreigners purchase land/real estate in Mexico?
No, but you can lease the land with all the rights of ownership. You obtain rights to the land or property through a trust called a Fideicomiso which is held by a bank in Mexico for a specified
time limit (usually no more than 50 years) and can be renewed. When dealing with real estate, always
cross-check everything to make sure it is legitimate and the owners are too. Seeing a real estate
agent, lawyer, escrow service, notary,
bank officials, etc. are all part of the process. Do your research.
What is the drinking age in Mexico?
Eighteen (18) for all citizens. You must have valid ID in the form of a passport or driver's
license. But do not carry open containers of alcohol in public. This will result in your arrest and
fine.
Can I get emergency cash in Mexico? All
the banks, large grocery stores and AM PM stores have ATMs in them. They have instructions
in English and Spanish, but only a few will give you US dollars. The exchange rate is about
ten pesos to one dollar, so if you want $50 dollars ask for $500 pesos. If you have
pesos leftover and want to convert them to dollars, there are stores that only exchange
dollars for pesos and visa versa. Just ask around for the nearest one.
